Paris is one of the most renowned universities in the world with a history stretching back over 800 years to its founding in 1150 and includes such notable alumni as Marie Curie, Albert Einstein, Léon Foucault (who invented the electric dynamo), Claude Monet and Ayn Rand. The University also played an important role in the French Revolution, serving as the seat of the National Convention and as headquarters for the Revolutionary Government from 1792–1794.
Today it has six campuses and 30,000 students across all disciplines including medicine, sciences, law, economics, humanities and social science. Paris was the first university to introduce free higher education, in accordance with Étienne Dolet‘s “Lettre aux Pères de la Visitandine”, published on January 6th 1535 – 460 years before the introduction of universal adult suffrage. In 1975, following the decollectivist reforms passed by Prime Minister Pierre Mauroy’s government, Paris became the first public establishment ever to charge tuition fees; they were abolished again by the present government in 2013. Today, just like high schools throughout France, the University of Paris receives no direct state funding—its budget must cover teaching and research activities, academic infrastructure, student services and, since 2014, the pension scheme.
It is the largest centre for graduate studies in Europe, hosting nearly ten thousand international students every year who can select among more than two hundred doctoral programs and participate in the life of the prestigious colleges. It operates under the joint authority of the Ministry of Higher Education, Research and Innovation and the City of Paris.
